All of us at American Self Defense Products  understand that our personal security is under attack in many ways from email to carjacking.  Over the next few months we will be going over Security and Safety tips in many aspects.

10 Tips for Safer Email:

Don’t reply to ANY unsolicited emails. Even unsubscribe will alert the senders that your email address is being used.

Use your messaging software’s filtering tools to reject mail from your frequent spammers’ email addresses or with certain words (sex, for example) in the subject line.

Find out if your ISP has a spam blocking service. If not, sign up for a third party spam-blocking service such as Brightmail (www.brightmail.com).

Contact the large directory services such as Bigfoot, Infospace, Switchboard, Yahoo People Search, and whowhere, to tell them you don’t want to be listed.

Encrypt and digitally sign all your sensitive email messages. If your messaging software doesn’t support robust encryption, download PGP Freeware encryption software (http://web.mit.edu/network/pgp.html) and use that.

Use WinZip (www.winzip.com) software to compress and password protect your attachments.

To avoid cookies sent via email, use email client software, such as Eudora Pro, that lets you shut off its automatic Web Browser rendering engine.

Don’t read email on a machine that doesn’t belong to you or someone you trust. If you use a browser to read email on someone else’s machine, use the browser’s Clear History tool when you finish to prevent subsequent users from getting into your mailbox.

Don’t send sensitive personal messages on your work machine.

Keep your antivirus software updated at all times.

  2. Great info and a terrific site, I have had some issues with security and concerns for my security online. I have had to send “Spoof” @ (companies name) so much lately, and it is aggravating. Actually scared to death after just making a payment to PayPal on thier website rather then my banking on line so it wouldn’t be late- due to the Veterans Day Holiday 11/12/07..and instead of getting a comfirmation I get a spoof email wanting my personal info and telling me that an IP address from out of the US has been trying to access my account!
So we need all and every kind of self-defense possible and information to protect ourselves in cyberspace! Thank you so much!

  7. Just another F.Y.I. (if it was there, I missed it) but PLEASE when you forward emails, clear off all the email names and addys of those it has already been sent to, or who sent it to you. Leaving them on there, allows them nasty people who sometimes intercept those emails to add all those email addys right to their junk email lists! plus its nicer when you receive an email that doesnt have a couple of dozen lines of previous email addys attached to them. Just my 2 cents. but yeah, thanks for the other info.

  19. Thanks for all this information. I always worry about this stuff and now I know about it. The problem is How do you put your name on things online when your name happens to have “fart” in the context, so sometimes you get rejected online for things because it says it is vulgur language !!!!
I have to type it different sometimes, just to get my name in a sweepstakes or something. It’s funny…. anyway, thanks for the information. It was very helpful.
